1999 sees the release of the second album of Mos Def: “Black On Both Sides”, a true masterpiece and an essential Hip Hop album. It’s with this opus that Mos Def aka Yasiin Bey began his solo career and has become a major force of the Underground Hip Hop in the late 90s.

Considered by many as the most complete album of the artist, containing quality samples, exceptional live instrumentation, socially and politically engaged lyrics, offensive or provocative and some Soul sounds… Not surprising that it ranks among the best Hip Hop albums of all time. With its mixtape, Hip Hop Is Read has highlighted all the samples used in the making of this album. We find among these samples, artists like Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest, Aretha Franklin, Beastie Boys, De La Soul, Gil Scott-Heron, James Brown, Burning Spear, Notorious BIG, Gregory Isaacs, Mobb Deep… Well, really heavy stuff!
